A serious case of \u2018afternoon-itis\u2019 making those eyelids droop like they\u2019re weighted down. They\u2019re probably hoping like mad that no one has noticed. For those that were, some may even have lost their jobs because of it. Would you believe, they\u2019re not alone?\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">According to the Sleep Health Foundation report, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleephealthfoundation.org.au\/files\/Asleep_on_the_job\/Asleep_on_the_Job_SHF_report-WEB_small.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Asleep on the Job<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, \u201c<\/span><b><i>four out of every ten Australians suffer from inadequate sleep<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. Half of these people experience ongoing pathologically high levels of daytime sleepiness. The rest know that their sleep is routinely insufficient because they can\u2019t function at normal levels of alertness, concentration and emotional control<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">That\u2019s a staggering <\/span><b>7.4 million<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> Australians who, according to the report, had inadequate sleep during the reporting period (2016\/17). Lack of sleep not only impacts our alertness and concentration but can also lead to other health issues. Inadequate sleep can cause an increase in workplace incidents (reported to be between 1.64 and 2 times more common in workers diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea). While research in Western Australia identified that heavy vehicle drivers (truck drivers) were three times more likely to have a motor vehicle accident if they had OSA, while in the USA, truck drivers with untreated OSA were found to be more than five times as likely to be in an accident.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 300; color: #000000;\">The true impacts of feeling incredibly tired at work go beyond an increase in accidents.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6f40887 elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"6f40887\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d2b3892 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"d2b3892\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The true cost of nodding off at work<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f9d240e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f9d240e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Both blue and white collar workers can suffer from excessive sleepiness at work. A fair amount of research has been conducted to try and identify the impact of lack of sleep on workplaces, with results showing sleep deprivation is also associated with reduced productivity, <\/span><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/344965190_Occupational_Outcomes_Associated_with_Sleep_Quality_and_Excessive_Daytime_Sleepiness_Results_from_a_National_Survey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">making errors at work<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, <\/span><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/erj.ersjournals.com\/content\/54\/suppl_63\/PA902\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">difficulty completing detail-oriented tasks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, issues with <\/span><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/6014124_The_impact_of_obstructive_sleep_apnea_and_daytime_sleepiness_on_work_limitation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">time management and interpersonal relationships<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, and increased moodiness. In fact, a lack of sleep can lead to depression, anxiety and increased stress levels.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">People who suffer from OSA and EDS can often have other medical issues caused by poor sleep quality, such as heart disease, obesity, depression and a range of other severe health conditions. Not only that, getting less than 7 hours of sleep a day can reduce a person\u2019s immunity making them <\/span><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamainternalmedicine\/article-abstract\/414701\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">three times more likely to catch the common cold<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. The result? An increase in absenteeism, which can deliver a significant impact on productivity.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Presenteeism &#8211; being at work but unable to function fully &#8211; is another impact of excessive sleepiness. Research reports show that it only takes two nights of bad sleep to <\/span><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/sleep\/article\/30\/3\/345\/2708190n\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">hamper decision-making<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> with a <\/span><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/watermark.silverchair.com\/sleep-20-4-267.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">significant increase in cognitive lapses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">; in other words, after just two days, a person\u2019s ability to perceive changes around them and react to them is significantly decreased.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The actual financial cost of inadequate sleep was calculated in the study <\/span><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sleephealthfoundation.org.au\/files\/Asleep_on_the_job\/Asleep_on_the_Job_SHF_report-WEB_small.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Asleep on the Job<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, with a total loss in productivity costing Australia $17.9 billion in 2016-17. Both employers and employees can take action to reduce the impacts of sleep deprivation at work.<\/p><p>For employers, updating your Work Health and Safety procedures to include strategies that identify employees who appear to show signs of fatigue at work and help them take action could greatly benefit the bottom line.<\/p><p>For employees, taking note that you are struggling with extreme tiredness and getting tested for sleep disorders is a great starting point.
