“My AHI went from 46 to 1! I have so much more energy to teach my third-grade class and spend time at the lake with my family.” —Steven
Who would have thought Little League Baseball would be the answer to my sleep apnea? During the postseason party, I heard some men talking about sleep apnea. I joined the conversation, as I had been diagnosed with severe sleep apnea about four years earlier with an Apnea Hypopnea Index (AHI) number of 46.
The conversation was about an oral appliance to treat sleep apnea from Somnomed. I had been using a CPAP machine for the past several years and thought this was my only option. My wife said it was better than the snoring, but was like sleeping with Darth Vader. So, I tolerated the hose, the chapped face, the nights where I was woken up when the face mask lost its seal and the ever telling nose hickey.
During the conversation, I was referred to a Dental Sleep Doctor, Dr. Kent Smith, in Frisco, TX. I received extensive information during my appointment with Dr. Smith about Somnomed’s continuous open airway therapy (COAT) and was ready to give it a shot. Ashley took an impression of my teeth and less than two weeks later I received my custom-made SomnoDent oral appliance. The first night I wore the device my wife said I didn’t snore. This continued for the next week and then I noticed I was dreaming. I couldn’t remember dreaming. It has been incredible to wake up in the morning and remember my dreams!
After a month of wearing my SomnoDent oral appliance, I had my follow-up sleep study. My AHI number was 1. I felt incredible. I had spent years trying to feel better, taking antidepressants, making changes in my diet, sleep medicine, and many others. They would work short term, but my exhaustion returned.
As this school year began, I felt energized teaching my third-grade class and could keep up with my students all day long. During previous years, I would leave work and be exhausted and need at least an hour nap. Now, My energy level maintains through the evening and I am even able to stay awake past 10:00. Plus, I can spend the weekends with my family at the lake!
A huge thank you to Somnomed from me, and my wife, for bringing me back to life!
