oral appliance therapy

If you have been diagnosed with mild or moderate OSA, SomnoDent® therapy may be just as effective as CPAP.

Let’s face facts. CPAP is a very effective treatment for OSA – but only if it is used every night.

Many things get in the way of a good night’s sleep with CPAP. You are connected to a hose that can stop you from turning over during the night. CPAP machines can be noisy, keeping you and your partner awake. And it’s uncomfortable wearing a mask while you are trying to get to sleep.

So, if you’ve tried wearing a CPAP mask and stopped or decided that CPAP is not for you, you are not alone.

Clinical studies have shown up to 20% of OSA sufferers chose not to start on CPAP, and up to 50% of CPAP patients have quit using it within one year.

It is important to treat your OSA, so a mouthguard like an oral appliance, made precisely to fit your mouth shape and your teeth, can help you get a comfortable night’s sleep. No masks, no noise, no hose, and no device to connect to.

Why can’t I use an off the shelf oral sleep device?

Why does my sleep apnea device need to be custom made?

The key to a good night’s sleep is a comfortable device. A boil and bite sleep apnea device that you mould to your teeth is cheaper, but studies show they are less comfortable, less effective and are worn less than oral appliances like SomnoDent® that is made specifically for you.

Why should I get my oral sleep device custom made by a dentist?

Sometimes, your doctor may recommend an off the shelf oral appliance. These are commonly called “boil and bite” devices, as you put them in boiling water to make the plastic soft, and then bite into them to mould them to your teeth. However, clinical studies have shown that oral appliances that are custom made for your mouth and teeth are superior to boil and bite devices. See below a summary of clinical studies.

On average, custom made devices reduce apnea events by 23% more for mild sleep apnea sufferers when compared to boil and bite devices. Therefore, a custom made device is more likely to be effective in reducing apnea events.

In one study, sleep apnea sufferers agreed that they were less sleepy the next day after they wore a custom-made appliance compared to a boil and bite appliance.

A custom made device is more comfortable, so sleep apnea sufferers can wear them for most of the night. One clinical trial showed an average of 6.5 hours of use for a custom made oral device vs. 5 hours for a boil and bite.

74% of patients, in one study, preferred custom-made oral devices over a boil and bite.

Patient stories

Derek’s story

“Before I found my sleep dentist I was sleeping with my CPAP device. This posed several problems for me. Most are the obvious: wearing the CPAP mask, trying to sleep with a hose attached to your face, having to travel with it, and then my allergy issues became more severe.

Maintenance is a pain as well. My SomnoDent® device has allowed me to enjoy life a bit more without the hassle of a CPAP. And, there is the added benefit of not having to make sure I have a source of power available. Which means, I can go camping again! I would recommend the SomnoDent® device to anyone with obstructive sleep apnea. It is life changing.”

Izy’s story

For years I fought with my CPAP, I literally tried 15 masks and I will never ever go back to CPAP after discovering SomnoDent®. I love it and so does my family because they can finally sleep in peace.

I can carry it, no more lugging around that extra CPAP baggage, I just throw my SomnoDent® device and case in my backpack and keep going. I truly am a big fan and if I can encourage others to switch to SomnoMed®, I know for a fact their quality of life would improve tremendously. Here’s another thing, I had a problem with grinding my teeth at night, not anymore!

Borris’ story

Although a bit reticent at first in the use of this tool, once I began using it and finding out how good a night’s sleep I could have after so many years of bad nights and untold other alternatives which always proved useless, I am now happy to let you know that thanks to SomnoMed® I am able to sleep very well and also that my wife can now enjoy a good night’s sleep without my racket at night.

Susan’s story

“With a household to manage, motherhood, night school for advanced degrees, and two jobs – good sleep seemed an unattainable goal. Over the years of sleep deprivation, my health steadily declined with resultant hypertension, chronic sinusitis, and eventually atrial fibrillation.

I had a sleep study that showed moderate obstructive sleep apnea. A second study to fit a CPAP mask was a dismal failure – 14 different masks and nothing fit.

My dentist suggested a SomnoDent® and my life has turned around since I received it.  My husband is delighted that I no longer snore. I’m off my blood pressure medications. I truly feel like a new person with much more energy. I can’t thank you folks enough for my SomnoDent®. I’m convinced it has literally saved my life.”
