The Sleep Physician evaluates the Patient’s clinical condition and orders a diagnostic sleep study. Based on the result of the sleep study – COAT® (Continuous Open Airway Therapy) is considered for the treatment of mild-to-moderate Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) or CPAP intolerant patients. The Sleep Physician may choose to evaluate whether the patient will respond to COAT of refer the patient directly to a SomnoDent Sleep Dentist for treatment.
If appropriate, the Sleep Physician writes a prescription for COAT® and refers the patient to the Sleep Dentist to have their custom SomnoDent oral device fitted. At the patient’s first appointment with the Sleep Dentist, the dentist will conduct an oral examination and take impressions and a bite registration so that the patient’s device can be custom made.
In a few weeks the patient will return to the Sleep Dentist to have their custom SomnoDent oral device fitted. The Sleep Dentist will show the patient how to wear, clean and care for their device. If the patient’s device needs to be calibrated differently, the Sleep Dentist will make the changes for then at an adjustment appointment.
Once titration of the oral device is achieved the patient returns to the Sleep Physician for a follow up efficacy and compliance test. This step is essential to ensure that the treatment is working and performing at an optimal level. The patient should also plan to visit their sleep dental provider annually for check-ups.
