Exploring dental sleep medicine
Dental sleep medicine is an area of dental practice that focuses on the use of oral appliances to treat sleep disordered breathing, including snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA). As part of a multi-disciplinary team, we encourage dentists and sleep physicians to work together in the treatment of those patients being prescribed an oral appliance.
Research proves repeatedly that poor sleep quality impacts on quality of life. At SomnoMed®, we strongly believe that dentists can have an impact on patients’ quality of sleep by treating their OSA with a SomnoDent oral appliance.

Advantages of digital scanning in the dental practice
The SomnoMed® range of oral appliances for the treatment of OSA incorporates the latest, most advanced technology in digital design and manufacturing to give the ultimate in fit and comfort.
For dental sleep providers to benefit from this technology, intraoral scanning to capture the patient’s impressions is becoming essential.
Although intraoral scanning is a relatively new innovation in dentistry, it is proving very helpful in Dental Sleep Medicine. Patients with a sensitive gag reflex no longer have to suffer impression trays and material and it provides a seamless delivery to the laboratory.
SomnoDent® devices are compatible with the scans of Trios, iTero, Carestream, 3M True Definition and more.

Mohammed’s story
Mohammed was diagnosed with Severe Sleep Apnoea in 2018.
“For the first year after my diagnosis, I had a CPAP machine in the home, but I really struggled with it, due to the anxiety of the mask being on my face all night. When I saw my Sleep Consultant, I was advised that I should not drive, and my driving license has now been revoked for more than 2 years. I have a family at home, with four children, so having no driving license has really affected our day-to-day lives. Little things like food shopping and trips out are much more difficult. Read more
