Frequent, loud snoring may be a sign of sleep apnea, a common and potentially serious disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts as you sleep. Not everyone who snores has sleep apnea, and not everyone who has sleep apnea snores. The biggest indication is how you feel during the day. Normal snoring doesn’t interfere with the quality of your sleep as much as sleep apnea does, so you’re less likely to suffer from fatigue and sleepiness during the day if you have simple snoring as opposed to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

However, snoring could be more than annoying – it could be a danger to your health. Click here to take a quick sleep questionnaire to see if you may be at increased risk of having sleep apnea.

Sleep apnoea is a condition that affects the way you breathe when you’re sleeping. In untreated sleep apnea, breathing is briefly interrupted or becomes very shallow during sleep. These episodes typically last between 10 to 20 seconds and can occur up to hundreds of times a night.

If your NHS sleep service does not currently provide an MAD service you will be advised to consult a private dentist. The cost of the device varies depending on the dental practice costs. Please see our dental search facility for a dentist near you. For further information click here.

The SomnoDent® oral sleep appliance treats obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) by advancing the lower jaw which keeps the airways open. The appliance is custom-made to fit your mouth and consists of upper and lower splint that cover your teeth and will be titrated to advance your lower jaw throughout the treatment process. As your jaw moves forward it in turn helps open your airway allowing you to breathe easier and sleep more comfortably for longer periods of time, helping you achieve a more comfortable sleep.

SomTabs are recommended by SomnoMed® for the gentle and thorough cleaning of SomnoMed® devices. SomTabs are available for purchase in a 3 months supply of 96 tablets. Click here for more information.

Please store your device according to the instructions provided with the device. Please keep it away from direct sunlight.

Damaged or broken devices must not be used. Continuing use may cause injury. Contact your dentist immediately if your device is broken or damaged. Your dentist will manage repairs and warranty claims.

Most patients easily adapt to wearing a SomnoDent® oral device at night. After wearing the device for a short period of time it will become part of your routine, and most people will hate to go to sleep without it after they realize how much better they feel in the morning (and how much better their bed partner sleeps as well).

Compliance rates for dental sleep therapy are much higher than other forms of non-surgical treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. In other words, patients are much more likely to use an oral device successfully than any other form of treatment. A recent survey of our patients indicated that 90% of SomnoDent patients regularly use their device.

Unfortunately the payment for the treatment of sleep apnoea with oral appliance is a private service.  We are working very hard to prove the efficacy and cost effectiveness of MADs to insurers, based on extensive clinical research, to ensure that no one with sleep apnoea is left untreated. We hope that in the future MADs will be offered as an alternative to CPAP where appropriate and for free.

Yes. The SomnoDent® MAD has been used by more than 650,000 sleep apnoea patients worldwide. The effectiveness of the treatment for sleep apnoea is clinically proven by multiple research studies. The innovative SomnoDent devices are ISO certified and FDA approved and are recommended by sleep specialists in 28 countries across the world.

No. SomnoDent® MADs are very comfortable to wear thanks to the patented design and flexible lining material. You can close your lips, speak, and even drink while wearing your MAD. Because the forces are evenly distributed over the teeth, after a very short period of getting used to it, wearing the splint will become normal for you. Because SomnoDent® MADs are small and discreet they are easy to take with you when travelling.

Due to the very high quality of the material, you can use your SomnoDent® a very long time. The fine adjustment can be corrected by a specialist at any time. Careful cleaning and care ensures optimal oral hygiene and protects against discoloration or odours. We offer 2-year warranty against material defects provided by the manufacturer who also testifies to a clear commitment to outstanding quality.
